Library Targets for the Second Quarter

During the second quarter of the school year the library focuses more on the reading of informational text. The Common Core State Standards call for more emphasis on informational text. Research has established the need for students to be proficient in reading complex informational text independently in a variety of content areas. To support this goal through all grade levels the library focuses on the differences between fact and fiction and the parts of a non-fiction book (the contents page, captions, glossary and index). The upper grades participate in an activity of evaluating specific informational text using the ten Grand Canyon Reader Award non-fiction nominees. The informational text are evaluated in a number of categories including the table of contents, index, glossary, chapter titles, headings and subheadings, the use of diagrams, charts, graphs and maps along with photographs and captions. The students rate the texts and vote for the one they believe would make a good resource to use.
